Road to PACK EXPO International
Bakery products present a different automation challenge than rigid, dimensionally consistent parts. These products can vary in position and appearance, require careful handling, and need to move through equipment designed for sanitary food production.
At PACK EXPO International, we’ll demonstrate one approach to this challenge by running donuts on our Ultimate Orienting Conveyor System. The application combines controlled product flow, mechanical orientation, and vision inspection to prepare products for downstream packaging.
While donuts will be running on the show floor, the system demonstrates a broader approach to automating product handling for food, bakery, and protein applications.

What Makes Bakery Product Orientation Different?
Moving products from one point to another is only part of the process. How those products arrive at the next piece of equipment can be just as important.
Products entering an automated packaging line may arrive in different positions or orientations. Downstream equipment often requires a much more predictable presentation.
The Ultimate Orienting Conveyor is designed to create that consistency. Rather than simply transporting products, the system singulates and orients them as they move through the bowl, creating controlled product flow for downstream packaging or additional automation.
For food applications, the equipment also needs to account for sanitation and the handling characteristics of the product. The Ultimate Orienting Conveyor is constructed from 304 stainless steel and designed for food-grade environments with wipe-down and high-pressure wash-down capability.
Product handling and sanitation requirements both influence how an orientation system is engineered for a food application.
How the System Controls Product Flow
For the donut application running at PACK EXPO, several functions work together to take products from less-controlled bulk flow to a consistent output.
Creating Controlled Product Flow
Donuts enter the system and move through the orienting conveyor, where they are separated into a more controlled flow. Singulating the products allows the system to manage each donut individually as it moves toward downstream equipment.
Mechanically Orienting the Product
As the donuts travel through the system, mechanical orientation features guide each product into the required position before it reaches the final select.
Engineering Insight
Mechanical orientation and vision perform two different jobs within the application. Mechanical features establish product orientation, while vision provides a final verification and inspection step before confinement and discharge.
Using Vision as the Final Select
Once mechanically oriented, each donut passes through the vision system for a final check before confinement and discharge.
The vision system determines whether the product is right side up or upside down and can also inspect defined product characteristics. For our PACK EXPO donut orienting conveyor demonstration, this could include a donut that is upside down, missing icing, or a different product with the incorrect icing color or flavor.
Products that do not meet the established criteria are rejected from the product flow and returned to the bowl for reprocessing. Acceptable products continue into confinement and discharge.
Creating Consistent Discharge
After passing the final select, acceptable products are confined and discharged onto the output conveyor in a controlled, consistent presentation for downstream automation.

Designed for Sanitary Food Applications
Orientation and inspection aren’t the only considerations in food automation. Equipment also needs to support the sanitation requirements of the production environment.
The Ultimate Orienting Conveyor is designed specifically for food-grade applications, with 304 stainless steel construction and configurations suited for wipe-down and high-pressure wash-down environments.
Systems can also be engineered around the needs of the larger production line. Depending on the application, configurations may include prefeeders to regulate product flow, vision inspection, custom conveyor lengths and layouts, and integration with packaging or inspection equipment.
This allows product handling, orientation, and inspection to be considered as part of the complete automation process rather than as separate functions.

Beyond Donuts
Donuts are the product we’ll be running at PACK EXPO, but they’re only one example of where this type of system can be applied.
Ultimate Orienting Conveyors can be engineered for food, bakery, and protein products that require controlled product flow, consistent orientation, or inspection before downstream packaging.
Common Applications
Depending on the product and process, applications may include:
- Donuts and other bakery products
- Cookies and snack products
- Buns and rolls
- Patties and protein products
- Prepared foods
- Other bulk food products requiring consistent orientation

The right configuration depends on the product and downstream process. Size, shape, handling characteristics, required orientation, sanitation requirements, production rate, inspection criteria, and downstream equipment can all influence system design.
For some applications, the primary challenge may be singulation and orientation, while others may also benefit from vision to verify product position or inspect defined characteristics before packaging.

See It in Action at PACK EXPO International
At PACK EXPO International, we’ll be running donuts through the Ultimate Orienting Conveyor System so visitors can see the complete process in action.
Stop by Booth N-5143 to watch products move from singulation and mechanical orientation through vision inspection and consistent discharge. More importantly, bring us your own product handling challenge.
Our team will be available to discuss your product, required orientation, production goals, sanitation requirements, inspection needs, and downstream process to help determine what approach could work for your application.
Now that you’re a little more oriented before the show, you’ll know what to watch for when the system is running.
